Presenting the winners of the GROHE Bath & Design Awards 2023

GROHE Bath & Design Awards, in association with AD India, have announced the winners for the 2023 edition of the accolades. In doing so, they have added 10 winners to the growing community of talented architects and interior designers facilitated by luxury fittings brand, GROHE. The annual awards intend to honour bespoke bath spaces—fruits of labour that epitomise luxury and indulgence.

To recap, the 10 winning entries were shortlisted from over 500 entry submissions. The two-month-long process was finally concluded by the adept jury members: Krupa Zubin, Principal Architect and Partner, ZZ Architects; Abin Chaudhuri, Founder and Principal Architect, Abin Design Studio; Iram Sultan, Founder and Principal Designer, Iram Sultan Design Studio; Aamir Sharma, Founder and Principal Designer, AANDH; Bobby Joseph, Leader, LWT India and Subcon; and Komal Sharma, Head of Editorial Content, AD India.

About the design: The design inspiration for the bathroom was nature. The duo said, “The site is on the client’s ancestral land and that’s why we wanted to incorporate nature in every aspect possible.” The sustainable bath space uses eco-friendly terrazzo flooring, which recycles marble scraps and cement. The design also incorporates a natural light source—the skylight. The use of the cherry blossom tree in the space ties together the fantasia elements in the design.

About the design: The pale pink and mushroom-white bath space detailed with light wood and gold accessories was designed to be youthful, fresh and sophisticated. The firm has used low-flow faucets in the shower heads and toilets to reduce water consumption. “Fixtures like GROHE dual flush technology, GROHE Echojoy for basin diverters and thermostat diverters significantly reduce the overall consumption of water and energy,” the principal architect said. In addition, there is a water harvesting system to recycle greywater for irrigation and other non-potable uses, natural light and ventilation and censored lights to help reduce electrical consumption.

About the design: The design concept for this restroom interior revolves around softer, curved shapes. This can be observed in the rounded basin counter, the organic contours of the mirror and the walls adorned with ribbed and plain marble. “We tried to minimise material wastage as much as possible throughout the project. For instance, for the organic mirror, we recycled scraps of marble to form the organic cut-out shapes behind,” the architects said. This washroom was created using all GROHE products including the SmartControl Thermostat with turbostat technology.

About the design: The minimalist elegance and monochrome patterns of this bath space create a spa-like atmosphere at home. Efficient thermostats, intelligent faucets and efficient showerheads have been used to reduce water wastage. Moreover, the oval bathtub design is accentuated by the minimalist charm of the raised platform. The futuristic lighting options and unique chandelier design tie the space together in synonymous harmony.

Firm: Elemental Story

About the design: Inspired by the Wabi-sabi design style, the guest washroom embraces the use of natural materials, muted earthy colours, and minimalist fixtures. Its focal point is an elegant brick arch accentuated by a large mirror. Moroccan diamond-shaped tiles provide a burst of colour to the design with sustainable elements being weaved into the space. The duo said, “By opting for an eco-friendly waterproof wall finish instead of tiles, the space reduces its carbon footprint. Additionally, the use of handmade bricks for the arch promotes local sustainable vendors. Various energy-saving measures were also introduced like online geysers and motion sensor lights have been installed to minimise power consumption.”

About the design: Pushing the creative boundaries, the design for this bath space has used marble with smart technology that the duo claim makes 33 per cent water savings. Additionally, the firm has used smart shower systems, and improved mirror and light technology to enhance the feel of the space. The striking use of black accents defines a clear boundary for the space, and clean lines in the design maintain a designated structure for the bathroom.

Firm: Associated Architects and Engineers

About the design: Positive energy and good vibes were kept at the heart of this bath space’s design philosophy. The angular definitions of the fittings and skylight optimise the space. The use of natural light in the bath space helps with mindful energy consumption while also allowing for a seamless design flow. The designer duo have also been judicious in the use of smart technology from GROHE such as the SmartControl shower and the high-tech basin mixer 3.

Firm: The Open Door Design

About the design: This unique semi-outdoor bathroom boasts a luxurious corner jacuzzi and an open shower that allows you to feel connected to nature. The combination of slate and basalt stones provide earthy tones that are complemented by the sleek look of micro concrete walls. The designers have used a double stone basin, which was handcrafted on-site. Overall, the master bathroom is an inspired design that encompasses a unique blend of natural and modern materials. From including elements of natural light and natural materials, the duo has also emphasised the use of smart motion-activated LED lights and ambient or dimmable lighting to reduce energy wastage.

Firm: Taliesyn Design and Architecture

About the design: The design inspiration for the bath space draws from the surrounding nature and seamlessly extends the living area. The bath space prioritises sustainability through various design choices. All fixtures are designed to minimise water usage, thereby promoting water conservation. The materials selected for the space are limited to cement and ash wood, emphasising natural and eco-friendly materials. It’s also designed to be naturally ventilated, reducing the need for artificial cooling systems. On the technology front, the architects have integrated the use of an automated water closet for efficient water consumption.

About the design: This master bathroom of a Tulum-inspired, Wabi-sabi home has been masterfully crafted to embody a pure aesthetic. Through the use of natural materials like premium wooden tiles and avant-garde design, the bath space exudes a raw organic style. The concrete bowl lights, complementing the vanity unit, also add to the overall aesthetic. The space is also equipped with state-of-the-art technology and custom-designed fixtures.
